Black British Music impacts culture on a global scale. It significantly contributes to the UK economy by boosting revenue, creating jobs, and fostering cultural influence, as evidenced by the music industry's record-breaking £7.6 billion contribution in 2023. However, in 2021 Black or Black British professionals comprised only 12.6% of the workforce at the entry level, decreasing to 6.4% at the senior level. Since 2020, Black Music Coalition, Black Lives in Music and Power Up have been established to better support, enable and lead the industry to strengthen the economies around Black music. This conversation explores the infrastructure necessary to empower exceptional Black talent for the good of the industry, economy and society.
