Description
The Mars Volta’s leading man Omar Rodríguez-López makes his fourth directorial outing with this stunningly shot blend of science fiction and dystopia set on the island of Borinquen, the Indigenous Taíno name for the island of Puerto Rico. Our hero here is Zur’na (Flora Sylvestre), who sets out to the neighbouring enemy territories ruled by American colonial forces on a quest to find her missing brother. Through Zur’na’s eventful journey, Rodríguez-López skillfully denounces the still very present ripples of American imperialism while referencing classic Latin American cinema and cult B-movies to craft a pulsating universe featuring intricate rituals, mind-control, and threatening holograms.
